Lesson Plan 2/3

Objective:  Students will be able to create a short story using the elements of story writing

Opening Activity (10 minutes):  Class will explore together the similarities in classic fairy tales comparing the stories of Cinderella, Snow White, Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Hen, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast.  Each story has a beginning – what happens in the beginning of every story?  The setting is described, the characters are introduced, and the initial conflict is revealed.  Each story has a middle – what happens in the middle of every story?  The characters become more real, they have things happen that they react to, and some action/climax occurs.  Each story has an ending – what happens at the end of every story?  The conflict is resolved; the characters are able to move past whatever happened and go on with their lives.  Identify each of these for each of the stories.

Story Development (10 minutes):  What are the essential things that need to be addressed in every story that we write?  Where it takes place, Who is involved, When it takes place, What the issue is that will need to be solved, How they will solve it and Why it happened or Why did they do what they did.  Solicit random ideas for each of these topics.

Closing Activity (10 minutes):  Choose from the ideas we have come up with (or your own) to determine your own story.  Use the Grandma Davis handout to develop the story elements and check off that you have the beginning, middle, climax, and end and in the process you explain what, where, when, who, why and how.

Assessment:  Each student will draft a short story using the What, Where, When, Who, Why, and How method showing a clear beginning, middle, climax, and end.  The actual writing of the story can take place after Grandma Davis leaves as an extension.
